How Calling a Contractor Changed My Life

This might sound completely crazy, but the most important call I ever may was to a construction contractor. I can remember the day as if it were yesterday. I had decided to rebuild parts of my home. This involved removing part of the roof, knocking down a brick wall and removing some electrical wires and water pipes. I started out just fine but then I started to have problems. I realised I was in out of my depth and decided to call an expert. The contractor who came around was great and he quickly fixed up the mess I had made. Since that day, I have had a keen interested in construction contractors. I hope you like this blog.

Ways a Custom Builder Can Help With Your Granny Flat

Granny flats are housing that many families are using to help their family members age in peace. They are also a way to offer young adults a way to avoid high university dorm or flat charges and offer an ideal option for extended stay visitors. With all of this in mind, you may be thinking a standard blueprint is ideal. The truth is, a custom builder may be more to your liking. Here a some of the ways that a custom builder can help with your granny flat needs.

Disability Consideration

One of the reasons that lead some people to granny flat consideration is a disability. Basic granny flat blueprints may not necessarily take your specific disability needs into consideration. In fact, some of the basic designs are equipped for wheelchair accessibility with little consideration to other needs.

A custom builder can help you create a granny flat design that fits the specific disability needs of you and your family member. These designs can incorporate methods to help your family member be more independent while giving you ways to help and provide care.

Door Sizes and Designs

In a traditional granny flat blueprint, the sizes of the doors may keep a small wheelchair in mind, but may not consider larger chairs or motorized mobility scooters. A custom builder can take your family members mobility issues in mind and create doorways that accommodate those needs.

For example, they may forgo a traditional doorway option of a double french door and go with a sliding door that has a built in incline instead of a step down. They can also incorporate doorways that are easy to navigate in both entry and exit and have safety options like handholds or railings.

Kitchen and Bathroom Arrangements

You may find that most granny flats offer a kitchenette rather than a kitchen or a bathroom that is traditional with handrails placed for safety. This is fine for some situations, but your loved one may want to cook and therefore wants a larger kitchen with safety options. You may also have an issue where they need a shower that is a flat design, allowing them to use a walker to enter the area.

In addition to these design changes, you may be creating a granny flat that will serve as a living option for a young adult going to university or for extended stay guests. This means you may have other options in mind for both areas that are easy to clean, manoeuvre, and are appealing for a more independent lifestyle.

These are just a few of the ways that a custom builder can help you create the granny flat that is idea for your needs. If you have some ideas already, consider bringing those to a consultation and discussing bringing those into the design and final build.
